Twenty-Two

“You weren’t exaggerating when you said castle,” Rosemary muttered as Burk pulled down a long and windy driveway towards a large, dark, Gothic structure in the distance, complete with jagged towers. He had picked her up just after sunset and driven for about fifteen minutes through the countryside before reaching their destination.

“Why would I exaggerate about a thing like that?”

“I don't know. Don’t all the guys brag about the size of their castles?”

“Perhaps this is a modern reference that I'm not quite familiar with,” said Burk with a grin and chuckle that said he knew exactly what she was joking about. “So how were your parents after I left?”

“Gosh,” said Rosemary. “They did grill me all about you. They wanted to know what you do for a living and were a little bit disappointed that you were a lawyer and not a church minister.”

Burk laughed.

“And of course they want to know when the wedding bells are going to be ringing.” Rosemary cackled. “As if that's ever going to happen.”

Burk looked at her with a serious expression.

“What? You weren't about to propose to me right now on our fourth-and-a-half date, were you?”

“Of course not,” said Burk.

“That's just as well, then,” said Rosemary. “I’m not prepared for that level of commitment or co-dependency.”

Burk coughed and changed the subject. “How's the shop doing?”

“Great,” said Rosemary. “In fact, it's possibly better off without me. I arrived there today and Papa Jack shooed me away saying I hadn't had enough rest yet and that he has everything under control.”

“Wow. That sounds promising.”

“It's wonderful. Isn't it?” said Rosemary. “That means maybe we could go away on a proper holiday. Just me and Athena. Will you miss me?”

“Of course I will.”

Rosemary batted her eyelids and laughed. “You don’t seem to miss me much when you’re away for work.”

“Rosemary, I think of you frequently. Just because my instinct isn’t to use modern technology to keep in touch every instant, don’t think for a second that I don’t miss you. I even think of writing you letters.”

Rosemary looked at him. “You seem uncharacteristically sentimental today.”

Burk shrugged. “Letters are how people stayed in touch for thousands of years.”

“So why don’t you write?”

“I assumed you’d find it unusual.” He gestured out the window. “Here we are.”

“I like unusual.”

He left the vehicle and in a flash he was opening Rosemary’s door, taking her hand, and leading her out of the car towards the entrance to the castle.

“I must confess, when you said nest I thought it was going to be some kind of underground hovel,” Rosemary admitted. “Nothing so grand.”

“We've been around a long time,” said Burk.

“With plenty of opportunities to amass resources, I guess,” Rosemary said nervously. “What kind of arsenal do you have in there?”

“You might not like the answer to that question,” said Burk.

“Okay, then!” said Rosemary. “Time to change the subject again.”

They walked up the steps towards enormous grey-and-black doors which began to open. A woman with long flowing black wavy hair and an hourglass figure stood there in a shimmery black dress.
